he Health Unit is called St. Monica Health Centre–Katende a grade III Health Centre and a Private not for Profit (PNFP). It was founded in 1914 by Rev. Fr. Loben who was by then a parish Priest of Our Lady of Consolata-Katende. It started as maternity unit service to cater for mothers of the community to arrest the so many complications face by then.

In 1979 the facility was destroyed by the war and re-constructed in 1988 by the benefactor from United States of America (USA) through Rev. Msgr. Dr.  Kannyike Lawrence of Kampala Archdiocese. The purpose of re-construction, was to render preventive, curative, promotion and education to the people of God faced with problem in as far as health is concerned.

It is located in Katende Catholic Parish of Kampala Archdiocese, Kiringente Sub-county in Mawokota North, Mpigi District, and 18 miles along Kampala – Masaka Highway.

The HUMC is nominated by the Parish Priest who submits names to the parish council for approval and then approved names are forwarded to the Diocesan Health Office (DHC) for appointments.

  • Lack of enough staff quarters
  • Lack of a concrete  fence for the facility for security
  • Lack of some essential equipment in Laboratory and Dental department
  • Inadequate funds for both running daily activities and development
  • Need for Out Patient Department (OPD) renovation to look more smart and clean
  • Veranda for Maternity ward needs some repairs
  • Salaries of our Staff still law compared to Government
  • (ACT)AIV/AIDS program not fully funded yet numbers are growing
  • Electricity bills are very high


  • Look for another source of funding for the development of the unit rather than user fees.
  • Purchase a new Microscope, Electrical Centrifuge, a solar fridge
  • Purchase of dental equipments
  • Renovation of OPD, Canteen and Maternity veranda
  • Establish a private wing for those who can afford
  • Construct a staff quarter
  • Fencing the Health Centre for security.
  • Expansion of ACT(HIV/AIDS program) clinic by looking for other donors
